Welcome to our 50 point briefing on the new MTD (Making Tax Digital) guidelines and what you need to do to prepare for them. We've split them up into 5 sections which cover basic facts and key dates to the software needed and tasks to complete.
Awareness & The "Why"
The Go-Live Date. "Mark your calendars: 6 April 2026. If your turnover is over £50k, this is your official MTD start date. Are you ready?"
Farewell to the 'January Panic'. "MTD replaces the once-a-year tax rush with quarterly updates. No more scrambling on January 31st!"
What is MTD for ITSA? "A simple intro: Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment is the new way to report business and property income to HMRC."
Who is in Scope for 2026? "If your combined self-employment and property income is over £50,000, the transition begins for you in April 2026."
The 2027 Wave. "Earning over £30k? Your deadline is April 2027, but the smartest businesses are starting their digital transition now."
Why the Change? "HMRC's goal is to reduce errors through real-time reporting. For you, it means a clearer view of your tax bill all year round."
The 'Qualifying Income' Rule. "Important: It’s your gross income (turnover) that counts, not your profit. Check your 2024/25 figures now."
Landlords are Included. "MTD isn't just for 'businesses'. If you receive over £50k in rent before expenses, you are legally in scope for 2026."
The Digital Record Myth. "A PDF bank statement isn't enough. MTD requires 'digital links' where data flows automatically into your tax software."
Better Cash Flow. "By seeing your tax estimate every quarter, you can set aside exactly what you need. No more surprise bills!"
Technical Requirements
The Three Pillars. "MTD consists of three things: 1. Digital Record Keeping. 2. Quarterly Updates. 3. A Final Declaration."
Quarterly Updates Explained. "Every three months, you send a summary of your income and expenses to HMRC. It's summary data only, not full accounts."
The Final Declaration. "This replaces the traditional Tax Return. It’s where you bring in all other income and claim your final reliefs."
Key Deadlines. "Your quarterly deadlines are the 7th of August, November, February, and May. Get them in your calendar now!"
What Counts as a Digital Record? "HMRC requires the date, amount, and category for every single transaction to be stored digitally."
Software is Mandatory. "You can no longer use the HMRC portal directly. You must use 'MTD-compatible software' from a third-party provider."
Can I Still Use Spreadsheets? "Yes, but only with 'Bridging Software' to digitally link your data to HMRC. Ask us if this is the right move for you."
Benefits of the Cloud. "Cloud accounting gives you real-time access to your numbers from your phone or tablet, wherever you are."
Ditch the Shoebox. "The era of paper receipts is over. MTD requires transactions to be recorded digitally as they happen."
Receipt Scanning Apps. "Tools like Dext or Hubdoc allow you to snap a photo of a receipt and sync it to your software instantly. No more lost paper!"
Preparation & Transition
Review Your Current Income. "Your income for the 2024/25 tax year determines if you hit the £50k threshold for the 2026 rollout."
The Digital 'Health Check'. "Are your records currently digital or paper-based? Use the next few months to bridge the gap."
Choosing Your Software. "Before you buy, ask: Is it HMRC-compatible? Does it have a mobile app? Does it integrate with my bank?"
Join the Beta Pilot. "HMRC’s MTD pilot is open now. It’s a great way to test your setup before it becomes mandatory in 2026."
Your Accountant’s New Role. "We’re becoming your real-time advisors. MTD allows us to see your data as you do, providing advice when it matters."
Dedicated Bank Accounts. "Keeping business and personal finances separate is now essential. A dedicated business account makes MTD 10x easier."
Combined Income Pitfall. "Remember: HMRC combines your self-employed turnover AND your rental income to see if you hit the £50k threshold."
Who is Exempt? "Some individuals may be 'digitally excluded' due to age, disability, or location. We can help you check if you qualify."
The 2026 Countdown. "Six months out: Choose software, open a business bank account, and start digitizing your 2025 records."
Test Your Workflow. "Try doing 'mock' quarterly updates this year. It will make the real thing feel like second nature come April."
Common Questions & Myth-Busting
Do I Pay Tax Quarterly? "Myth buster: No! While you report quarterly, your tax payment dates (Jan/July) remain the same for now."
Is it More Work? "It’s 'little and often'. Spending 10 minutes a week on your software replaces days of stress every January."
Correcting Mistakes. "Don't panic if you make a mistake in a quarterly update. You can simply correct it in the next submission."
Multiple Businesses. "If you have two separate trades, you need to keep digital records for both. We can show you how to manage this."
The Penalty Points System. "HMRC is moving to a 'points-based' system for late submissions. One slip-up won't cost you, but regular lateness will."
Tech Requirements. "You don't need a high-end PC. Most MTD software works perfectly on basic laptops, tablets, or even smartphones."
Data Security. "Digital records in the cloud are far more secure than paper in a folder. Your data is encrypted and backed up automatically."
Support for the Non-Techy. "Not a fan of computers? There are many 'user-friendly' options available, and we are here to provide training."
Watch for Scams. "As MTD rolls out, be wary of fake HMRC emails or texts asking for 'quarterly payments'. Always check with us first."
The Cost of MTD. "Factor software fees into your 2026 budget. It’s a small investment for a much more organized business."
Final Countdown & Success
The Final Quarter. "This is your last 'traditional' tax year. Use this time to refine your digital habits before the 2026 switch."
How to Sign Up. "You must officially register for MTD via GOV.UK before your first update. We can handle this registration for you."
Side Hustles Matter. "Selling on platforms like Vinted or eBay? If your total income crosses £50k, these 'side hustles' are in scope for MTD."
Property Specifics. "Jointly owned property? Each owner must report their share digitally if their total income hits the threshold."
Success Story. "We helped a client move to MTD early. They now spend 70% less time on admin and always know their tax position."
Weekly Habits. "Top tip: Spend 5 minutes every Friday 'matching' your bank transactions. It’s the secret to a stress-free MTD experience."
Already VAT Registered? "If you already use MTD for VAT, you’re halfway there! Income Tax uses the same digital-first principles."
Free Software Options. "Many business bank accounts now offer free MTD-compatible software. Check your banking app for 'Business Tools'."
April 6th: We are LIVE. "The new era of tax has begun. Ensure your first transactions of the new tax year are being recorded digitally today!"
